“I’m interested in intuitive, improvised painting. Perhaps intuitive is the best word. Because improvisation contains the idea that an original idea or concept exists and the actual painting will be a spontaneous variation of the original concept. A good example is found in Jazz music. If you begin with an original melody, say “My Funny Valentine” a jazz musician may play the melody first quite faithfully with deep feeling then begin to creatively alter or improvise over the original melody.”

“time to IMPROV”

Acrylic & Pen on Gloss Paper - Secured in the 2010 Journal

“Improvisational painting like Jazz music, is a poetic collection of decisions made on the fly — inspiration! Hearing the subtle voice of the muse.”

“Jazz composition can be a metaphor for modern abstract expressionism art. The early artists in NY knew this, Pollack, Kline, DeKooning, etc. but the trends and fashions were moving so fast that most of the real progress was undervalued and undermined. The next generation moved on to Pop art without fully realizing the potential for continued investigation and the maturity that comes only with time.”

— R. Scott English (Journal Entry 2010)

I keep thinking of jazz musicians jamming together, discovering a new composition, then beginning the process of experimentation; changing elements until the song finally sings... I believe that process applied to painting will enable me to paint paintings that sing!
