“art is an expression of JOY…”

R. Scott English inspired and brought joy to each person that knew him. This is the story of one man’s journey through life...through art

The Artist

R. Scott English (1951-2022)

The late R. Scott English dedicated his life to abstract painting. He leaves behind a legacy… a loving wife, 5 beautiful children, grandchildren and an extensive art collection and 52 hand-written journals.

In the 80’s Scott showed extensively in galleries and at art fairs throughout Colorado. When he moved with his wife and children to Boca Raton Florida, he produced numerous large paintings and commissioned works for interior designers and luxurious homes in South Florida.

Just as his career was taking off, he suffered an incredible setback.  His painting hand and arm became paralyzed due to complications from a childhood treatment for cancer. For the next 15 years he embarked on a spiritual journey which led to a temporary hiatus from his art.

In 2006 he returned to his artistic creation and first love. Using his other hand, he developed a distinctive and joyful approach to abstraction using watercolor as his primary method of inquiry.

As a proprietor of abstraction and layered detail, R. Scott English would take his time constructing multiple stages of his creation. He would start by setting the environment. Music was a very important part in laying the foundation. He would select each record carefully in order to create a very specific mood. Musical greats such as Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Thelonious Monk, Louis Armstrong, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan and The Police were just as important as the palette of colors he later selected. This process inspired each work and was embedded into the character of the painting, becoming…

The iconic ”flow of creation”…

The small, playful, paintings which are just a small sample of his work are offered as Gicleé prints. The entire R. Scott English collection is quite large, complex and displays expressionism in its greatest form through large format acrylics and oils on canvas, watercolors on cotton rag, and a technique as unique as the artist.

Danielle and Deborah (daughter and former wife) are continuing to share his artwork with others through the R. Scott English LLC. Both can be reached via email at info@rscottenglish.com.
